What is the difference between the 1st gen and the 2nd gen models?

According to the specs, the 1st gen had a maximum gain of 46 Db, while the new model can go up to 50 Db.  I imagine that’s only one reason that the new model is said to have better pre-amps, but anyway, it’s stronger.

Is this usb 3 or still usb 2.0?

USB 2.0. Focusrite states the following on their website: “…although USB 3.0 offers greater bandwidth than USB 2.0, it will deliver no round trip latency benefits over USB 2.0 … for our largest channel count USB audio interface, the Scarlett 18i20, USB 2.0 provides more than enough bandwidth for delivering 18 channels of audio inputs and 20 channels of audio outputs simultaneously.”

If it works on Mac it will work on Linux. (At least from my [extremely simple] understanding of how OSX is written)

no

Do i need speakers that have their own power? can i use un-powered stereo speakers since monitors are expensive and i don’t care about sound accuracy?

The output out of the interface is line level, so if you’re connecting to unpowered speakers they will require an amplifier.
